The Conscious Activist

The Conscious Activist. James O’Dea is the lead faculty person for the Shift Network’s popular Peace Ambassador Training, with hundreds of participants worldwide training to become peace ambassadors under his mentorship. His previous course with the Shift Network, “The Path of the Peacemaker,” attracted students from 24 countries. James also offers Breakthrough Intensives for emerging leaders of all agesO’Dea was recognized as “Champion of Peace, Reconciliation and Forgiveness”by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance.

An extraordinary and rousing manifesto from award-winning author James O’Dea, The Conscious Activist is both a compelling narrative and a deep reflection on the demands of mystical realization and effective activism. Throughout the book, O’Dea poses that an integration of the two has the power to permanently transform the social order and to wake up humanity from its course of rapid self-destruction. Divided into two parts, Part I offers parallel narratives of author James O’Dea’s training and spiritual development as both a mystic and an activist. The mystic, he explains, must move past petty ego concerns in order to experience oneness with each other and our divine source. The activist, on the other hand, explores the role of passion and conscience in activating social change. In Part II, O’Dea pursues this fascinating concept of a meeting ground between the two worlds, where spirituality and action unite to spark an accelerated transition towards our greater goal: a more evolved civilization. He asks us all to become conscious activists – to learn, collectively, how to move beyond our rigid conformity to beliefs of the past and its archaic structures of power and control.

He is on the Advisory Board of several organizations including The Peace Alliance, and is also a member of the Evolutionary Leaders.

Healing Both Victims and Perpetrators – James O’Dea

Healing Both Victims and Perpetrators – James O’Dea, author of Cultivating Peace and The Conscious Activist.  Buy James’ books here.o'dea james

A  young man with racial hatred in his heart and carrying a concealed weapon, which he acquired without a background check into his criminal record, enters a church famed for its role in the civil rights movement in Charleston, South Carolina. He knows it is the hour for a prayer circle attended by some prominent African-American leaders. He intends to kill them and by so doing instigate riots and a race war.   Before he kills nine people, all African-American, he hesitates and almost reconsiders, based on the fact that the people present were so kind and welcoming to him. But the blinding wound of racism boils up inside him and he carries out his intended murderous rampage.

In the days after the slaughter of the innocents not only did this depraved violence fail to ignite a race war it exposed the persistent and virulent legacy of racism and its practice and symbols. It revealed the profound depth and unshakable dignity of a whole community and rather than triggering reactivity it called forth higher ground and, in some cases, remarkable statements of compassion and forgiveness by families of the victims.

The African-American community in Charleston has set a new high benchmark in responding to racist attack. To achieve this level of attainment requires a deep understanding of wounding and its transformation.

To begin any historical or collective healing process there must-obviously- be a cessation of oppression and abuse and a clear dismantling of the structures of power and privilege that propagate exclusion, inequality and distorted stereotypes. But one cannot legislate an end to  wounds which feed off unresolved hurt and trauma or feelings of lack of safety, betrayal or loss of status. If this psychological aspect of healing is not addressed, more formal legal progress and reform is always in danger of being overtly or covertly sabotaged.

The psychology of social healing understands that the wounds of both victims and   perpetrators need to be addressed. Objective truth is needed to unmask the precise functioning of systemic oppression, as well as its chains of command, its proxies and surrogates and to disseminate the reliable historical accounting of its abuses. Subjective truth, on the other hand, is needed to open windows into the pain and trauma experienced by victims and to pave the way for reconciliation and even forgiveness. But this kind of emotional and psychological truth is also needed for perpetrators to understand the lies and false ideals that were transmitted to them and the very personal way they were inducted into ignorant prejudice. For the perpetrators must enter into a spirit of genuine atonement if they are to transmute the poison they ingested and come to a clear realization of their part in the propagation of grievous harm.

The wound goes into hiding—wears camouflage- if not addressed. It takes the form of avoidance and denial. It pretends everything is fine when it isn’t. It gets pushed down into the personal subconscious and the collective unconscious. It congregates with other wounds and waits for the toxic biochemistry of rage to bring it out of hiding– seeking vengeful expression.

It is often the victims—as exemplified by the African-American community in Charleston—who do the necessary emotional, psychological, and spiritual work necessary to heal things from the inside out. More often than not perpetrators and those who actively or passively colluded with them take a simplistic short-cut defined by a let’s move-on approach. But social evolution shows us that even very old wounds can be ignited under certain conditions and rip apart social facades.

The Charleston mass murderer, for example, believed he was serving the Confederate Flag with all of its associations of racial superiority.  That officially sanctioned symbol flew, after all, at the state capitol. You could say that flag was a time-bomb waiting for any wounded soul given a gun to go out and honor its great lie—that white people are racially superior.

What a moment of evolutionary grace it will be to see that flag coming down. But this should be more than a symbolic moment, it should be an opportunity for atonement and forgiveness. It is the perpetrators and their progeny who must sincerely beg forgiveness from the victims and their progeny.

Evolving together takes more than legislation or even good intentions, it requires balancing our need for strength with sharing our vulnerability. Justice can only thrive when there is compassion and understanding.

Yes indeed, as we evolve we recognize that it is the heart which holds the great key to our collective healing, to real civility, true progress and the courage needed to face our own shadow.

Tuesday, July 31, 10:30pm EDT:

Jake SwampJake Swamp, chief of the Wolf Clan of the Mohawk Nation, part of the Iroquois Confederacy, teacher, author, founder of the Tree of Peace Society, born 1941 and passed in 2010, was a well-loved Native leader.

The first part of today’s show is a documentary of Jake Swamp’s life, and the second part, a talk by Mitchell directly to the audience about a Conference called Belonging to Mother Earth of which he was part of the Core Planning Committee, and Jake was part of the cultural and spiritual events.

This was the largest Indigenous People’s Conference of its kind up to 1998 and was held in Virginia Beach in collaboration with the A.R.E., the Edgar Cayce Institute.

This is classic A Better World footage as well as of Jake Swamp and his life.

Mitchell conducted other interviews with Jake on location on a farm in West Virginia, where they were both part of and participating in events and activities of the Wilderness Awareness School in the mid 1990’s founded by Jon Young, first student of the Tracker, Tom Brown.

This evening’s show is offered in honor of Jake Swamp and his exemplary life, and that of many indigenous people on Turtle Island who have sought, against such resistance, to model a way of relating to Mother Earth and to Mother Universe, as Duane Elgin spoke of it last week in our dialogue on radio, that was respectful and sacred, and how to walk lightly.

Don’t miss tonight’s show if you can possibly see it.

Too PreOccupied to Occupy?

In this world, we have many people who are paying close attention to the events occurring in our society, domestically and globally, sociologically, politically, economically, psychologically, spiritually and ecologically.  Would this be 10-15%?  And what of the other 85? Are they too preoccupied to occupy the space that is ours, the halls of government, the bread and butter of our economy, the reigns on regulation so that those who have vacated the heart premises, ‘no longer occupied’, cannot run rampant on our precious Earth, exploiting its every resource for private gain at every one else’s expense?

Indeed, every day, so much of many of our lives are governed by simply trying to pay one’s rent, electric, phone and food bills.  We have become slaves to a lifestyle that technology was to enhance so to create convenience, ease and leisure.  But this hasn’t exactly happened.  In fact, it has virtually–no pun intended–backfired.  More technology, allowing for easier communication, has actually encouraged less leisure time and more time for work.  Why?  It’s easier and we need more money to pay for the basics, so we have a society of workaholics.  Many do not feel that they are preoccupied with their daily routines and concerns to take in the purview, spend time seeing ‘the larger picture’.

Native American Peace Pipe CeremonyThis is sad, because we are not even occupying our own bodies and lives.  If we are not, how in the world do we expect to help govern it with centered, thoughtful consideration of the whole?  We must open our heart-minds to all of sentient life like any good Buddhist, be in the flow like any good Taoist, love all beings as our brother and sister like any good Dalai Lama with Chinese DelegatesChristian and be law-abiding, that is Universal Law, like any good Jew.  And sing the praises and pranams to Diety, like any good Hindu.

If we are not occupying ourselves, our spirits are floating somewhere outside the temple of our bodies and how can we expect to get anything lasting done?  How do we help to establish peace inside and outside ourselves if we’re not present to ourselves?

This week, we have shining examples of Peace-Making on both our TV and Radio shows.  This is a brief biography of Jake Swamp, relative to the cultural context of the Native Peoples of Turtle Island and the Mohawk story-line:

Jake Swamp-Tekaronianeken, 68, the Wolf Clan Mohawk diplomat, author, teacher, chief, husband, father, grandparent and great-grandparent passed into the spirit world on October 15, 2010 in Massena.

Swamp was one of the most respected and honored Mohawk Iroquois leaders of the past century. He was a member of the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs for over three decades, a position in which he served as a counselor, spiritual leader, legislator and ambassador. He was an exceptional orator with a powerful command of the Mohawk language. He possessed great knowledge as to the cultural heritage of the Haudenosaunee and shared that wisdom not only with his people but at forums, conferences and classes across the planet. He was known not only for his knowledge but for his teaching skills which were defined by his unique sense of humor.

When Skennenrahawi (the Peacemaker) established the Haudenosaunee Confederacy nearly 1000 years ago he set standards for leadership which were embodied in Tekaronianeken. He was patient, compassionate, humble, generous, intelligent and kind. Whenever he was called upon to serve the needs of the Haudenosaunee he did so without hesitation. He established the Tree of Peace Society in 1984 to promote the teachings of the Skennenrahawi while advocating greater ecological awareness and sensitivity. Swamp planted hundreds of Peace Trees in many nations, an activity begun with the founding of the Confederacy. Through his example millions of trees have taken root around the world from Israel to Australia, Venezuela to Spain and in all regions of North America.

Jake SwampJake Swamp was a founder of the Akwesasne Freedom School in 1979 and helped develop a curriculum which was based on the traditional values of the Haudenosaunee. He managed Radio CKON at Akwesasne and not only oversaw its Native based programming but helped secure its status as the only Native licensed broadcast facility in the Americas.

Swamp served as a Mohawk Nation diplomat in many instances. He addressed the Fourth Russell Tribunal in the Netherlands, was a delegate to the United Nations, met with leaders of foreign nations and advised representatives from the US Congress and Canadian Parliament. He worked closely with scholars to have the US Senate pass a resolution acknowledging the influence of the Haudenosaunee on the US Constitution and thereby initiated a revolution in the understanding of American history. He was a delegate to two sessions of the World Parliament of Religions where he was affectionately called “el jeffe”.

As a member of the Mohawk Nation, Tekaronianeken took an active role in preserving the ceremonial activities of the longhouse people. At each one of the rituals he rose from his seat as a Wolf Clan leader to address the people, with the beauty of his words calling their attention to those rituals which express the nation’s collective gratitude to the natural world for the blessings of life. He presented infants to the people, gave advice to newlyweds and spoke words of condolence to those who suffered the loss of their loved ones.

There is another requirement for leadership set by Skennenrahawi, perhaps the most important of all. Before one can become a leader that person has to have the love and support of their family and must in turn love them; peace in the home brought about clarity in council. Tekaronianeken was a devoted family man, married to Judy Point Swamp for 49 years. Theirs was a solid and stable union defined by mutual respect, admiration and a quiet yet powerful affection. Jake was a highly skilled ironworker, he was one of the legendary Mohawk “skywalkers”, travelling great distances to provide for his wife and children. This determination to insure his family’s health and security was a legacy of his parents, the late Leo and Charlotte Papineau Swamp. Jake was the second child of fourteen, in a family raised to be self reliant, hardworking and creative.

We see here a life led, exemplified by Jake, of an inner and outer life of peace.  Jake knew, as do a good many of us, that peace is not to be found in a treaty, but a state of heart-and-mind, a way of being, of relating, and if enough people related peacefully, treaties would be unnecessary or simply redundant.  I am honored and privileged to have known Jake as a mentor of mine and as a friend for a period of time.

Many years ago, a group of friends of mine in Upstate NY in the Catskill Mountains, found properties suitable for building a peace-based, cross-cultural community to promote the values of Peace and Harmony with Mother Earth, on which we, with Jake, his family and members of the Mohawk community were looking to collaborate. While it didn’t happen, the experience offered an opportunity to spend more time with him and Judy, his wife, during that period of time.

Benjamen Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, had studied Mohawk, the language, their body politic and culture. In fact, our Constitution and Bill of Rights were significantly based on the Iroquois and Mohawk Nation’s ways, yet also with significant exclusions.  But no matter, the Native understanding of relationships of different parts of government and the way of governance, greatly influenced our greatest Founding Fathers of the USA.

James O’Dea, Peace-Maker, of Amnesty International this Week’s Guest on
A Better World Radio

The second Peace-Maker interview this week is with James O’Dea, who has an outstanding commitment to cultivating and ‘being peace’ in a world fraught with stress, tension, conflict and violence.  His position with Amnesty International, the Institute of Noetic Sciences’ President, his writings and life-work have all contributed to moving the cause of peace forward in creative, provocative ways.

A Manifesto for the Emerging Culture of Peace

James O'deaA new peace movement is rising out of the hardened soil of our long planetary winter. It is evidenced by the Arab Spring and the emergence of the Occupy movement. It is reflected in the blossoming initiatives of peacebuilders everywhere to create a world without war or weapons of mass destruction. It is showing up in a myriad of conflict situations where activists are bringing parties to violence into honest dialogue. The real promise in this flowering, writes author James O’Dea in his newest book, is the emergence of a planetary culture of peace featuring permanent structures for the resolution of conflict that are rooted in a holistic understanding of the problem of violence.

Doing this work requires a “practice of peace” in the broadest framework possible, argues O’Dea in his acclaimed new work, CultivatingPeace: Becoming a 21st-Century Peace Ambassador(Shift Books, June 15, 2012).
No longer is the peace movement framed solely by its opposition to war and human rights violations, he declares; it has moved on to the systemic work of creating nonviolent cultures and just and sustainable societies from the ground up. “Peace can no longer be reduced to flags, banners, and protest movements,” writes O’Dea, who worked for a decade as the director of the Washington office of Amnesty International. “The concept of peace is now much larger and more encompassing because it brings together both inner security and global security.

The mission of O’Dea’s current work and newest book, therefore, is to train peacebuilders in the art and science of peace work while also practicing the ways of peace within themselves—that is, to “be the change” they seek.

Going “Deeper In” and “Further Out” for the Sake of Peace

It is for these reasons that—in the coming century—peacebuilders will find that disciplines such as psychology, spirituality, science, and systems theory are now at the table along with law, political science, and diplomacy. For these future ambassadors of peace, the elements of this new dynamic will include:

• Integral development: inner transformation matched with a capacity to reach measurable social goals and to master daunting political challenges.

•  Cultural transformation: changing beliefs that provide the structural underpinnings of violence, including toxic beliefs about others inherited from the “wounds” of past generations.

• Systemic change: a whole-systems orientation that frames problems far more widely than the former practice of merely opposing those who instigate wars or hatred.

• Awareness of complexity: a greater mastery of subtlety and complexity, including a deeper understanding of the science of human consciousness, which O’Dea himself gathered in his role as the president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences over many years.

Violence Against the Earth

Surely we seek peace among ourselves, members of our own species, where so much animosity exists, either overtly or covertly, even among the more enlightened beings walking the planet.  Indeed, we are part of the eco-sphere, the noosphere, the morphogenetic field, and what Werner Erhard refers to as “the cultural and background listening”.  Whether we feel the animosity on a personal level or not, we are connected with it on these levels. Human education so needs to include character development and human evolution is largely war on Terraabout learning to live in peace in and with our environment.  Yet, in addition to the violence perpetuated against each other, we have so powerfully aimed at our Earth and all her creatures, having done untold harm here and having caused mass extinctions of entire species, which continues literally daily, hard to imagine as it might be.

I suggest that the lack of harmony we avoid with our larger biological Mother, Mother Earth, is in direct proportion to the horrors of Global Warming, Climate Change, extreme weather and geological explosions.

Our own selves as microcosm, is a concept we just don’t seem to digest, as we see ourselves as so small and inconsequential.  In last week radio guest’s book, The Living Universe by Duane Elgin, he makes the point that we are all giants, a very interesting perspective. If we were to entertain that idea more deeply, we would gain a greater sense of how we influence our world, each other, and our Earth.

I hope you tune in both to Tuesday night’s TV show about Jake Swamp, and Wednesday evening with James O’Dea.  Both can be seen or heard at www.abetterworld.tv.

This week’s theme at A Better World is the conscious use of resources, especially capital, for making the world a better place.
In that regard, we are airing a show on Conscious Capitalism, the work of my guest Patricia Aburdene, author of  the Megatrends series and more recently, Conscious Capitalism.
Patricia is one of the world’s leading social forecasters. She was John Naisbitt’s collaborator on the publishing phenomenon Megatrends which topped charts in the U.S., Germany and Japan and was translated into many languages.
For twenty-five years, she has been tracking how change impacts business. Through her books, talks and workshops, Patricia Aburdene has helped thousands of organizations and millions of people make the most of social change and transformation. Patricia’s work is a blueprint of the social, economic, environmental and spiritual trends transforming free enterprise. As the tag line promises, the book describes seven new trends that will transform how people “Live, Work and Invest.”Tune into this lively dialogue about how corporations in America, behind the scenes, are transforming into being more conscious, ecological, humane and sustainable even though this information is rarely seen on the nightly news, yet it is a movement of significant proportion.

Key technologies can help to reverse the multi-century long trend of ignoring the consequences of poor pollution management by corporations and government.  These technologies can help us effectively manage energy as well as create it in a sustainable way.

The Advanced Energy Conference at the Jacob Javitz Center here in NYC on April 30-May 1 is addressing some of these important concerns, which can be effectively and profitably picked up by business.  Today’s radio show will address this turnaround in thinking and action in the business community as energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and sustainability become increasingly popular and demanded by the public.

Today’s show will be an Advanced Energy Roundtable with the following guests:

David WinchesterDavid Winchester is the founder and Chief Learning Officer of CleanTech Rocks, a company with the mission to stimulate the development and success of clean-tech companies and professionals.  CleanTech Rocks focuses on developing innovative business and learning programs across all sectors of clean technology to provide companies and individuals with a competitive advantage.

David has developed and directed the CleanTech Quickstart program to rapidly transition experienced “professionals in transition”, entrepreneurs, students and executives into the CleanTech sector.  David’s ability to identify and recruit individuals to the program, encourage high performance and provide valuable learning experiences has led to the program’s success and significant positive outcomes.

David’s prior successes include establishing and formalizing the human resources department with the primary focus of recruiting, retention and professional development as EVP HR and Dean of Invision University at Mind SHIFT Technologies, Invision.com.

Pat MalonePat Malone is the Executive Director of The Center for Corporate Education and Training and the Advanced Energy Institute in the Office of the Vice President for Economic Development at Stony Brook University.   Pat conducts presentations nationally and internationally on the universities role in workforce and economic development, credentials and green collar/ cleantech jobs.

She participated in a Stony Brook University delegation to China to discuss cooperative efforts in moving to a low carbon society and presented on LEED credentialing at Tongi University in Shanghai. She has assisted 100’s of companies in implementing certifications in ISO, LEAN, Six Sigma, management and technical development serving over 1500 professionals annually. Pat launched the Advanced Energy Training Institute as a resource for offering recognized credentials in a greening economy. Under her direction the institute was a core research partner in the federally funded green jobs study which assessed emerging, existing and transforming jobs in the clean-tech sector.

A Change in Energy Sources Leads to A  More Sustainable World:
A Taste of the Kind of Cutting-Edge Coverage on A Better World Radio & TV
windmillsNo one thing will change everything, but enough “one things” can change enough so that we move from a fossil-fuel based economy to a renewable-resource-based one.  Germany, the country farthest ahead in conversion to a green economy, is still approximately at 20%, country-wide, generating electricity from wind, solar and hydro-power.  They are showing the world that a first-world nation can move beyond fossil fuel and nuclear energy as its bases and that it can be done.  Of course they’ll need fossil fuel for the next perhaps 25 years as they make the transition, perhaps longer, but in diminishing amounts, which will confer upon them greater and greater energy autonomy.  With their own renewable energy, windmills and the like will shoot up on individual buildings, houses, etc., further democratizing energy use.  If you want to talk about democracy, you do want to talk about equitable access and distribution of energy.
No, we do not have a country that is yet getting the full message about thinking green, renewable and sustainable. However, great leaps have been occurring in business and the thinking of engineers and operations staffs.  Good progress is being made.
hydropowerYou won’t see it represented much on commercial TV, but you will see it ‘on the ground’ such as at Conferences such as the Advanced Energy Conference at the Jacob Javitz Center in NYC on April 30-May 1 which A Better World will be attending.  You will hear some of its keynote speakers on A Better World Radio’s Roundtable this Wednesday at 6pm EST hosted by Mitchell Rabin speaking about the latest advances in business and industry in respect to these key changes in energy production and usage in our country.  It is happening and A Better World is reporting on it.  Tune in to hear a few of the leaders of renewable energy speak of the changes taking place, the excitement about them and the implications of them.
A Better World’s 20th Year on the Air! Anniversary Celebration & Fund-Raiser
on Tuesday, April 30 at the MetaCenter–Will You Join Us? Make a Contribution?
A Touch of History
20 years anniversary

Mitchell RabinMarch 2013 marks 20 years of Mitchell Rabin producing and hosting A Better World TV on the airwaves of NYC and beyond. It’s so long ago that the digital revolution occurred during this period. In 1993, we were still doing linear editing and using VHS tape, which we did here until about 2004. And what a world of (good) changes we have seen since.

20th anniversaryMost important, A Better World has given voice to the progressive and out-of-the-box thinkers, scientists, healers, artists, journalists, progressive politicians, spiritual teachers, consciousness leaders for 20 years, during a time when most people were still very embryonic when it comes to the idea of awakening to both world realities and cosmological/spiritual realities. A Better World TV, and for the past 8 years, A Better World Radio, has been a beacon of light, amusing, educating, elevating, provoking and inspiring its audiences all over the country and beyond.

a better world tv imageFrom nearly the beginning, A Better World was aired weekly in Brooklyn, Fairfield County, Marin County, San Francisco, Tucson, Santa Cruz, Denver and Boston in addition to Manhattan. Then, when internet became its own valued medium, instead of shipping out VHS tapes (funny to think about eh? it’s like emerging from the cave…) to all of these different local TV stations which we used to do, then mini-dvs, then DVDs, we stopped that time-consuming, pricey practice and now air on TV directly in Manhattan and still Fairfield County (thanks to our dedicated sponsors there) and for the rest of the world, they can view on-line on our website, www.abetterworld.tv where we have a link to it, simulcast with the TV airing of Tuesdays at 10:30 pm EST. In just the space of 20 years, we have gone through major changes in technology, actually 2 quantum leaps and the needed equipment adaptation, during this period of time.

a better world radio imageWe have had people on who you would likely never find on commercial, conventional TV. For instance, Christopher Hills, the “Father of Spiriulina” who made a lot of money in trading in London, then took his money and built spirulina farms all over Africa to overcome poverty and hunger. We had the former head of Amnesty International on who was working diligently at bringing the abuses of justice across the world to light and here on A Better World, we helped him. We had healers of all sorts doing the most innovative techniques with kinesiology, energy-healing, Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy, Chi-Kung, Chinese herbs, Ayur-Veda. We’ve had guests speaking on sexual practices from India, China and the Native Peoples of Turtle Island speaking about how these practices both pleasure the body and uplift the soul. We would go far out and I interviewed Lorna Byrne on who speaks with angels to 3rd Party candidates running for President of the U.S., from Dr. John Hagelin to Rocky Anderson.. We’re not particularly concerned with other people’s judgments about the metaphysical, the esoteric or the supremely idealistic or progressive. Our job isn’t to limit our thinking by conforming to the “little boxes”, as Pete Seeger sings about, of society. To the contrary, ours is to think as big, as authentically, as multi-dimensionally as we can, into the world of infinite possibility. We are envisioning a world described by the freedom of Shambhala, not a world such as we’ve created to date of one sort or another of slavery and oppression.

Mitchell RabinI interviewed teachers of Feng-Shui like Judith Wendell (on radio so far), well-known musicians such as Here-to-Here to an occapella group, Beyond Belief from The Bowery Mission, a group of men who had been homeless and intoxicated most of their lives, living out of shopping carts under bridges, and had become sober and singing at public schools in the Tri-State area, to educate young people about avoiding drugs and alcohol, to excel in school and make best use of the opportunities given them by their families and society. (I loved that interview!).

Horst RechelbacherI’ve interviewed the founder of Aveda, which became a leader as a green, sustainable company, representing a new business trend, Horst Rechelbacher.  Horst was a guest on A Better World TV back in the mid-1990’s and on Radio a few years ago.

jackie MillerI once interviewed the author of Heart At Work, Jackie Miller, whose book has chapters by leading CEOs in the country who are instituting healthy changes in their companies which address the needs of their employees and bring heart back into the corporate fold.

I’ve interviewed numerous teachers from India, Tibet, China, Russia, Siberia, Canada, U.S. South America, Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, shamans, intuitives, healers, medicine men, ayauasceros. I’ve also interviewed more recognizable people such as astronaut Edgar Mitchell, one of the first men to walk on the moon, Uri Geller, Dan Millman, Gay Hendricks, Dr. Emoto, Wayne Dyer. Debbie Ford, Andrew Harvey, Kurt Johnson, Amit Goswami all the way to actor David Carradine, who was a spokesperson for World Water Rescue Foundation on which I serve on the Advisory Board.

Bruce LiptonThe first time Dr. Bruce Lipton, now world-famous (and loved) cellular biologist was on TV and really made public was on with me on A Better World TV going back to 1994-95. And I’ve done several interviews with Bruce since on TV and radio.

Dr. Gabriel Cousens the same. British biologist Rupert Sheldrake, one of the foremost social scientists J.J. Hurtak, first internationally-known for The Keys of Enoch, peace activist, author and troubadour Jimmy Twyman, the internationally-acclaimed author of Conversations with God, Neale Donald Walsch, social philosopher Barbara Marx Hubbard, the teacher and author, Andrew Harvey, former Assistant Secretary of the U.N., Robert Muller, his biographer, Douglas Gillies, outstanding social reformers from Sri Lanka, such as Dr. Ariyatne and his son, who were actively engaged in the reformation of Sri Lankan villages from medical, economic, social and political perspectives. For the period 1995-2000, I was particularly involved at the U.N. and in the NGO world, and interviewed several people in studio from then. And then we have had extraordinary healers on such as Robert Peng, his first time on NY TV, whose personal story, which he tells on the show is as extraordinary as his skill as a healer.

One of the more notable remains a friend to this day, former head of The World Peace Prayer Society, Deborah Moldow, who continues this sacred work in and out of the U.N. Dr. John Hagelin, award-winning physicist from Harvard, also known for his part in What The Bleep Do We Know, ran for President of the U.S. in the Natural Law Party three times, was on A Better World TV several times, giving him exposure that he was not able to get in the commercial media. And same most recently with two-term, former Mayor of Salt Lake City, Rocky Anderson, who ran for President this past 2012 in the newly-formed Justice Party.

Mitchell RabinI have interviewed Native American leaders such as Chief of the Turtle Clan of the Mohawk, Jake Swamp, Chief Oren Lyons, Muskogee Nation-Creek Tribe Bear Heart and 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe Orvol Looking Horse.

The list goes on and on. There have been over 2,000 interviews for A Better World TV that I have produced and hosted over these past 20 years.

welcome to a better worldThe cost of production for all of these years has been borne by me. Largely from my work as coach, stress management consultant and therapist, I have managed to budget for the TV show all of these years. I have had many dedicated interns over the years who have helped tremendously. I have done a good amount of editing myself as well, but editing, along with maintaining a practice, writing, teaching and being involved in eco-projects as I have been over the years, it simply becomes untenable, it’s complete overload. I simply need technical support.

My commitment to A Better World, both through my own organization and in ‘reality’, the work of my life, has cost me not just money but in my personal life. It’s not easy to speak of but, suffice it to say, there has been cost & loss. Let’s not go into it!

mitchell rabinBut also so very important to say, there has been great satisfaction and pleasure in bringing forward to the world rich wisdom, sacred activism, environmental awareness, the importance of wellness and independent, authentic, out-of-the-box thinking, the role of humor in healing and living, Hosting and producing A Better World, both on TV and Radio, has given to me,a beautiful opportunity to meet world-leaders and world-changers, people committed as I am to transformational, evolutionary outcomes that contribute to the visioning and manifestation of a better world for all. It has given me an opportunity to live from my passion, to stretch myself into compelling territories and dimensions, to give something to the world, education, fundraiserelevation, something authentic, humorous, transformative and inspiring, and this all simply makes me feel very, very good. It’s given me a chance to also have a lot of fun while making a difference.

At this point, for the next 20 years, I need a little help from my friends, supporters, philanthropists, fans and guests.

Mitchell RabinI have been compared to a number of notable interviewers, and some say that I bring more to the table then some of the more known. That aside, when I think of my style, I see myself as what you get when you put Bill Moyers, a more alive and funny Charlie Rose and Oprah together in one. What a combo! Playfully, several have referred to me as a white, male, Jewish Oprah. All so funny and fun. No matter, Mitchell Rabin does as he does, the sung and the unsung heroes, and we all want to see this good vision & work continue and expand.

To expand, I do need help. We have, for the first time, begun to monetize A Better World. Event promotions, radio spots and sponsorships, we are, after 20 years of public service and giving away the store, have begun a long overdue, new task.

video editingIn order to sustain, in order to grow, we need your help. We have many interviews which have gone unedited and therefore not aired. We have much editing to still be done, web work, video library administration just to get up to date with what we already have in the can.

And simply we want to grow. Good friend of mine & and A Better World’s, Andrew Harvey, was here doing two shows with me on his translation of the Sufi poet Rumi, and amidst the celebration, was surprised to learn that A Better World wasn’t yet on Link TV or Free Speech TV. He immediately provided his contacts to them and said emphatically that we should be on these alternative media.

Others have spoken about getting us on different cable stations and in different venues, domestic and international many times. But without the funding to hire reliable editors and even a small production crew, without doing two-and three-camera shoots, we are not hitting the broadcast quality button we need and we are thereby limited. Having a fund to tap into can not only bring us to another level of operation but can also help us become profitable and sustainable. I have always kidded around by saying: “A Better World? Oh it’s great. High-quality, low-tech.” We’ve got the high quality content–now we need to match it with broadcast quality. This the platform we are seeking to access, with your help. Our guiding logo at A Better World is “The creative & visionary exploration of Human Potential” and that’s what we now need some help to further cultivate.

FreeVector-Dancing-People-VectorSo! You are invited to our special 20th Anniversary Celebration Fund-Raiser at the MetaCenter in the middle of NYC on Tuesday, April 30 from 7-9:30 to celebrate in person with us. We will be raffling off several items and services there that would appeal to the holistically-minded individual. We’ll have cell-niquehealthy Green Drinks provided by the generosity of the founder of Cell-Nique (www.cell-nique.com) and some nibbles toward the end, the provider still being considered. We will be doing a live taping of two abridged interviews and people who have been supporters of A Better World and Mitchell Rabin for decades saying a few words about us, the deep value and the importance of alternative media in today’s world.

Dr. Rona Allen, Chiropractor, lymphologist and song-writer, as well as lead singer of the group In the Light, will be performing as well as the MC of the evening. In short, we are looking to have a lot of fun and looking to raise a lot of money for A Better World in that fun and enlightening evening.

A Better WorldBut we have friends across the country and the planet. Some are well-to-do and perhaps most are not! Some are generous in many ways and we are asking that those of you who have been enjoyers of A Better World TV or Radio over the years, or even if recently, give a contribution of whatever amount is really reasonable for you. It can be done by sending us checks (write to abetterworldinfo@yahoo.com for our mailing address, that is, for larger amounts, if we were to be so blessed!) or simply going to our website, www.abetterworld.tv where you’ll see a Donate button via Paypal at your very earliest, and if you would like us to, we’ll announce this at the Event, time-allowing.

fundraisorA Better World is a group effort. We’ve had many committed people working side-by-side with me over the years and what a blessing this has been. Many supportive friends such as, and especially, David Katzmire, who built the website as a gift to A Better World and has been instrumental from nearly the beginning in the daily and weekly work of A Better World.

Before starting his own TV and radio show, my long-time, dear friend and brother, Alan Steinfeld, did all the camerawork here for years and was a key part of A Better World. And there have been many, including more recently, interns Phyllis and Randy Fryar, who work weekly and tirelessly in helping to prepare the A Better World Newsletters and various and sundry other web and video tasks greatly needing attention. I have been blessed with wonderful angelic assistance for quite some time.

fundraiserWe don’t make money from this. Quite the contrary, in order to provide this public service to you all, we pay. It cost us! It’s been fine for 20 years this way, but now, we need a sea-change. Even with all of my ‘sechel’, and pretty good sense of business, our sense of mission and service came first and weren’t going to let money slow us down or get in the way. Hallelujah! But it’s not a sound, sustainable business model at all. And, with your help, we are re-visioning this, and are asking for your participation at whatever level suits you. It could be $120 paid at once or in $10/month increments over the course of the year. Or $20 total. Or $1,200 paid in the same way. The amount isn’t the point, but some participation is, and every amount, from whomever, is appreciated and will be used wisely to serve the higher purpose.

audienceWe have given our guests a good amount of promotion, exposure and PR for all of these years which has been our goal. We have given to our audiences richly as well. Now, to the extent that you are able, please find a few shekels and let’s empower A Better World to continue on and roar forward into the future so to really provide this educational, provocative, awakening and inspiring platform that it is.

money envelopeIf you can make it at the event itself, please RSVP literally as soon as possible because capacity is no more than 100 people. Reserve your place as much in advance as possible! To do so, email us at: abetterworldinfo@yahoo.com and give your name and how many people are coming with you with their names and email addresses. We are asking for a suggested contribution of $33, but everyone will be given an envelope and you simply put in what really is affordable to you! And you’ll leave with a really enriched time under your belt and an eco-friendly A Better World Tote Bag! if not a few other possible goodies here and there. Only the first 100 will be able to attend so make sure that you’re one of those. Those who have attended my gatherings before know that they tend to get ‘quite crowded…’!

In advance, thank you so much for your material and spiritual contribution. I cannot tell you how appreciated both are to us. It is with humility that I ask for your assistance here in pressing A Better World forward and with deep gratitude for your participation.

They bring the Light of Love, Awareness, and Vision to this planet which on the surface is further and further falling into darkness.

Mitchell Jay Rabin is one of such visionary bringers of Light. The Light that he brings to the world is a uniquely dynamic tapestry of diverse currents of light that holographically reveals a new world to come. He is a post-postmodern renaissance man of many talents and broad knowledge, tirelessly brazing new trails on the leading-edge of human evolution.

Mitchell’s radio and TV interview shows feature those diverse currents of light—visionary bringers of Light—who are now expanding and extending the vast evolutionary horizons of human consciousness. In my personal experience he is one of the best interviewers I have ever met because of his intelligence and his ability to listen and owing to the great depth and scope of his knowledge. I am deeply honored to be his friend.

If you want to keep yourself abreast of the latest advancement in human knowledge and action and if you want to partake in the cutting-edge of human evolution, I recommend that you make Mitchell’s programs a part of your life.

The Tim Leary figure of the 90’s, Terence McKenna died April 3, 2000. He was the world’s premier ethnopharmacologist, which is to say he specialized in exotic psychoactive plants. Terence is the author of five books & the famous software program “TimeWave”. Based upon the mathematics underlying the ancient Chinese oracle The I Ching, he discussed this unique time in human history and discusses “The Big Picture”.

McKenna’s contributions to science include the theory that psychedelic mushrooms spurred humans to develop consciousness and language; and the “Timewave” theory, described by chaos pioneer Ralph Abraham as “the first model for history that significantly transcends that of the ancients.” Learn About: • Art, Novelty, the Internet, Time & the Future as Terence & his software see it. • Implications for us during the “first-time-ever” period of extraordinary novelty as we enter the 21st century. • How we can align with “The Transcendent Object at the End of Time”

Tune in tonight for one of the last interviews conducted with Terence before his untimely passing.

Yasuhiko Genku KimuraMitchell’s guest this evening is the inimitable Yasuhiko Genku Kimura, philosopher; ordained Zen Buddhist priest, scholar; teacher of esoteric spiritual philosophies of the East and the West; creator and leader of transformational programs; consultant and adviser to leaders in business, science, and cultural organizations; researcher of science and scientific paradigms; translator of ancient Japanese and Chinese scriptures; and author in the fields of spiritual philosophy, evolutionary ethics, integral science, and business leadership.

Mr. Kimura is considered one of the most original, visionary thinkers in the field of integral and evolutionary philosophy. He is recognized for his unique ability to integrate advanced Western scientific thought with intuitive Eastern spiritual insight to bring about radical and lasting transformation in individuals and organizations. His numerous writings and seminars are acclaimed for their originality and spiritual depth.

In the field of self-development, Mr. Kimura teaches a uniquely integral way of consciously directed self-evolution by creating a synergistic, evolutionary structure for transformational self-study which is incomparable in its depth, scope, and power—without the usual external authority or guru-follower structure and without the dependency on any particular conceptual models or frameworks.

Yasuhiko was interviewed by such outstanding thinkers as Ken Wilber, who recognized Kimura’s intuitively “integral thinking”.

Mitchell interviewed Yasuhiko on his TV program going back to Spring 2006, and has invited him back to be a guest on the radio show in Spring 2012, a period of great growth and gestation for these two colleagues and friends.

Tune in to hear a dynamic dialogue about the ideas underlying Authentic Thinking and Living, a blend of Eastern wisdom with Western lifestyle and wisdom as well.

A Better World’s 20th Year on the Air! Anniversary Celebration & Fund-Raiser
on Tuesday, April 30 at the MetaCenter–Can You Join Us?
A Touch of History

We would go far out and I interviewed Dolores Cannon who claimed to have hypnotized people and gathered information coming to her from Nostradamus and I interviewed 3rd Party candidates, running for President of the U.S., from Ms. Harding to Dr. John Hagelin.

Mitchell RabinI interviewed teachers of Feng-Shui like Richard Feather Anderson, well-known musicians such as Deva Premal,& Miten to an occapella group, Beyond Belief from The Bowery Mission, a group of men who had been homeless and intoxicated most of their lives, living out of shopping carts under bridges, and had become sober and singing at public schools in the Tri-State area, to educate young people about avoiding drugs and alcohol, to excel in school and make best use of the opportunities given them by their families and society. (I loved that interview!).

I once interviewed a Sufi who was working with a young, black man from the South Bronx who had been a gang member. At a certain point in his gang life, he had a stirring revelation which had him completely change his life and converted from stealing elderly women’s purses to helping the elderly up the stairs while protecting the neighborhood, and converted his former I did a series of interviews with a former Marine and cop from the Bronx who walked across the country, then much of the world, in the name of peace.

Mitchell RabinI’ve interviewed numerous teachers from India, Tibet, China, Russia, Siberia, Canada, U.S. Debbie Ford, Jackie Miller and actor David Carradine.

The first time Dr.

Holding a Celebration & Fund-Raiser April 30 & You’re Invited!

welcome to a better worldThe cost of production for all of these years has been borne by me.

But also so very important to say, there has been great satisfaction and pleasure in bringing forward to the world rich wisdom, sacred activism, environmental awareness, the importance of wellness and independent, authentic, out-of-the-box thinking, the role of humor in healing and living, Hosting and producing A Better World, both on TV and Radio, has given to me,a beautiful opportunity to meet world-leaders and world-changers, people committed as I am to transformational, evolutionary outcomes that contribute to the visioning and manifestation of a better world for all. It has given me an opportunity to live from my passion, to stretch myself into compelling territories and dimensions, to give something to the world, education, elevation, something authentic, humorous, transformative and inspiring, and this all simply makes me feel very, very good.

Event promotions, radio spots and sponsorships, we are, after 20 years of public service and giving away the store, have begun a long overdue, new task.

fundraiserIn order to sustain, in order to grow, we need your help.

We don’t make money from this.

We have given our guests a good amount of promotion, exposure and PR for all of these years which has been our goal. We have given to our audiences richly as well. Now, to the extent that you are able, please find a few shekels and let’s empower A Better World to continue on and roar forward into the future so to really provide this educational, provocative, awakening and inspiring platform that it is.

partyingIf you can make it at the event itself, please RSVP literally as soon as possible because capacity is no more than 100 people.

It is with humility that I ask for your assistance here in pressing A Better World forward and with deep gratitude for your participation.

thank you

A Better World’s 20th Year on the Air! Anniversary Celebration & Fund-Raiser
on Tuesday, April 30 at the MetaCenter–Will You Join Us? Make a Contribution?
A Touch of History
20 years anniversary

fundraiserMarch 2013 marks 20 years of Mitchell Rabin producing and hosting A Better World TV on the airwaves of NYC and beyond.

Yasuhiko Genku KimuraThere are visionary bringers of Light in the world working individually and collectively at this critical moment in human history and evolution.

Ray Caamano has been committed to creating a better world for a long time and is a life-time mission of his.  It is this of course which has brought Ray and Mitchell together and since meeting, have partnered in both addressing the issues of inner and outer ecology or landscapes, as Mitchell likes to put it.  You don’t have one without the other and tonight’s interview will address this salient point as well as others.
Mitchell and Ray have traveled together, promoting the intelligent use of both of these technologies and together gave a talk for S.E.A.T. at the U.N. about the use of the EEG device as a means of reducing stress so that diplomacy and understanding between people of different nations could be heightened.

barry snyder karen andersonFor today’s show, colleagues & dear friends who I originally met in India in 2004, Barry Snyder and Karen Anderson will be discussing another form of healing which they have written up in their latest book, called The Luminous Self.

In Barry’s own words, he came into this life as part of a group of souls that would awaken from the dream of American culture and pave the way for many to follow. He was immersed in the dream of wealth and success, in fact, working in the banking industry, when his world fell apart. He found himself praying to a God that he wasn’t even sure existed.

The Divine responded as a movement of energy deep within his chest, just above the heart. Communing with this inner presence and following its promptings became his path beyond suffering. He left his corporate career, sold everything, and went to Asia in search of a God-realized being. There, the great mahavatar Babaji became his guru.

Later, a Kundalini awakening opened the soul lotus above the heart, revealing the presence of the Divine as not only Barry’s true nature, but the innermost identity of all beings. After this realization, Barry found that he  could directly activate awareness of the Divine core essence in others.

After re-uniting with his twin soul, Karen Anderson, they continued to facilitate awakenings to the soul and the multidimensional Self. During the next twenty-five years, they developed inner processes and received Transmissions of Grace that powerfully catalyze the journey into the inner sanctum of the soul.

Many spiritual seekers believe they can bypass their shadow material and go straight to the Divine. The work that Barry and Karen do has taught them that the path into the soul realms often takes people through the most painful and wounded aspects of the psyche. If we can fully face and embrace whatever arises, we will be shown the way through it into our divine core. Thus, their motto has become: “Our stuff is not IN the way, it IS the way!”

They specialize in assisting those who are experiencing the greatest resistance and pain in their journey to find the passage through into the joy, love, wisdom and all the other divine qualities that are inherent in our true nature.

We recently had Barry and Karen on with Matrix Energetics founder Richard Bartlett and his co-facilitator, Melissa Joy.  Matrix Energetics was highlighted in that compelling show, so today we want to feature the spiritual healing work of Barry and Karen as described in their book, part of a trilogy, called The Luminous Self.

A Better World’s 20th Year on the Air! Anniversary Celebration & Fund-Raiser
on Tuesday, April 20 at the MetaCenter
A Touch of History

MJRMarch 2013 marks 20 years of Mitchell Rabin producing and hosting A Better World TV on the airwaves of NYC and beyond.

We would go far out and I interviewed Dolores Cannon who claimed to have hypnotized people and gathered information coming to her from Nostradamus and I interviewed 3rd Party candidates, running for President of the U.S., from Ms. Harding to Dr. John Hagelin.

Debbie Ford, Jackie Miller and actor David Carradine.

The first time Dr.

Holding a Celebration & Fund-Raiser April 30 & You’re Invited!

welcome to a better worldThe cost of production for all of these years has been borne by me.

It’s given me a chance to also have a lot of fun while making a difference.

At this point, for the next 20 years, I need some help.

Event promotions, radio spots and sponsorships, we are, after 20 years of public service and giving away the store, have begun a long overdue, new task.

fundraiserIn order to sustain, in order to grow, we need your help.

We don’t make money from this.

It is with humility that I ask for your assistance here in pressing A Better World forward and with deep gratitude for your participation.

thank you

Yasuhiko Genku KimuraThere are visionary bringers of Light in the world working individually and collectively at this critical moment in human history and evolution.
