Francisco Nunez, director, presents a new work by the composer of Revelation, Michael Harrison, bringing evocative, purely tuned sounds to the 92nd Street Y at Kaufmann Concert Hall with HIJAZ, on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 8 p.m. Cellist Maya Beiser is the featured soloist and percussionist, Payton MacDonald creates an alluring backdrop for this singularly beautiful new work, with the composer playing just-intonation piano.

The concert encompasses a list of original voices, including works by John Corigliano, Paquito D’Rivera, David Del Tredici, Gabriela Lena Frank, Meredith Monk and Michael Torke. Hosted by John Schaefer of Soundcheck on WNYC, New York Public Radio.

2011 promises to be an exciting season for Michael Harrison. With the completion of Hijaz, Harrison reveals a whole new side of his musical persona. The work will then be repeated at the Bang on a Can Marathon on June 19th as a part of the River to River Festival. His newest work, a piece for cellist Maya Beiser, Just Ancient Loops, is for multiple-prerecorded tracks and solo live cello, and along with Hijaz is to be recorded by the Cantaloupe label for release in 2012. In May 2011, the opening of the Bragdon Pavilion will be celebrated at the Centre Pompidou (Paris) with Harrison’s sound installation in collaboration with acclaimed French artist Loris Gréaud. Gréaud & Harrison are also collaborating on the Pandit Pran Nath Pavilion to open in India in the fall.

“Say it plainly – Michael Harrison’s ‘Revelation: Music in Pure Intonation’ is probably the most brilliant and original extended composition for solo piano since the early works of Frederic Rzewski three decades ago (and no, I am not forgetting Elliott Carter). What could have been a mere glossary of unfamiliar sonorities made possible by Harrison’s unconventional tuning of a grand piano turned instead into a virtuosic tour-de-force that would have done credit to the hypothetical team of Franz Liszt and Claude Debussy work. Standard tuning is just fine for most music, but there are other ways of tuning a piano, which produce exotic and weirdly beautiful sounds. Revelation, an often gripping 12-part suite by pianist-composer Michael Harrison, explores one of these disorienting landscapes. Like a magician setting up a trick, Harrison introduces a few of the geographical landmarks in the first movement, “Revealing the Tones”; then, just when you think, “Well, that doesn’t seem so unusual,” everything changes. The workshop will open up with the ancient Chinese exercises for moving chi, the Life-Force of the body, Chi-Kung, a “meditation-in-action”. After getting in touch with the Energy of the Earth, we’ll move into doing communication exercises which facilitate our having much more fun, honest, genuine relationships, using the world of Therapeutic Theater. When combined, one learns something of the depth of one’s energy field and body, and how to communicate that to the outside world.

Mitchell J. Rabin, holistic psychotherapist, founder of A Better World, has been in practice in NYC for many years. His background in spiritual psychology, acupuncture and stress management gives him a way to work with his clients on many levels, and he has brought this fun way of thinking and seeing to Sivananda Yoga Ranch every Spring since 2000. Mitchell hosts TV and radio show in NYC weekly.
