Deborah’s most recently directed The Symphony of Soil.  She has a Master of Fine Arts from The San Francisco Art Institute and has made fiction, educational and documentary films. She owns her own production company in the Bay Area of California. For the last ten years, she has focused primarily on films about agriculture and the food system.

Deborah fell in love with filmmaking when she first picked up a Bolex while a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1970. She went on to receive a koons-Garcia symphonyMaster of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her educational series All About Babies, narrated by Jane Alexander, won a Cine Golden Eagle and a Gold Medal from the John Muir Medical Film Festival, among other awards.

Her feature film, Poco Loco, “finds its groove in gentle romantic fantasy” according to Variety, and won awards at the Philadelphia, Rivertown and Orlando Film Festivals. She was the instigator and chief Creative Consultant for Grateful Dawg, a documentary about the musical friendship between her husband Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Grateful Dawg premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and went on to a lively run in film festivals, in theaters and on television. The Future of Food was shown over a dozen times as a work in progress in Mendocino County, California before the March 2004 election and was the primary element in passing Measure H which bans the planting of genetically engineered crops in the county. It is the first time U.S. citizens have voted on this very important issue. The film won an “Above and Beyond” award from the Women Film Critics Circle in 2005. All the people who worked on The Future of Food are proud that our efforts have had a real impact in the real world.

Deborah Koons-Garcia is the third wife and widow of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Deborah and Jerry met in 1975 and maintained a friendship for the years to follow. They were married in 1994.  Mitchell interviewed Deborah originally on Progressive Film Hour with Mitchell Rabin on PRN and again for A Better World TV on location in Mill Valley, CA.

On this week’s A Better World Radio, Mitchell holds a Roundtable on honoring Mother Earth with Native American leader Patricia Anne Davis and Helene Abrams & David Giller.  Join us for getting into the depths of our Earthly Nature.
On A Better World TV, Mitchell speaks with the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia’s former wife, the lovely filmmaker Deborah Koons-Garcia.  After driving up a tall mountain in the middle of Marin County, I reached a house on its summit, where Deborah and I sat for hours in her living room talking and doing an interview for A Better World to inform the audience about the beauty of the soil, our precious Earth and the journey she takes us on in the world of worms and fungus and creatures beneath our feet.  The film is exquisite and inspiring.  It is educating children and adults around the world.
